Bookish Identity Tag

Bookish Identity Tag

Hey guys! This is going to be my first tag challenge is long time. I have been too busy reading review copies and posting those reviews rather than doing fun stuff like. Something I hope to remedy in the next few months.

So let's begin!

I was tagged in this challenge by the beautiful Izzy @ The Reading Izzy over a month ago. Sorry for being so late Izzy! And don't forget to check out her challenge too.

*****************

Which dystopian world would you live in?

Hmm I don't think I would really want to live in a dystopian world (for obvious reasons) but the first place that came to mind was the post-apocalyptic world from The Host by Stephanie Meyer. There isn't any natural disasters or zombie infestation going on in that world so that is a huge bonus, but I also think it would be nice living in Uncle Jeb's cave refuge and learning about the universe from Wanda.

Who would your partner be?

I assume this means a romantic partner and, like always, I am going to have to say either Will Herondale from The Infernal Devices or Cole St Clair from The Wolves of Mercy Falls. There could be plenty more but those are my top two options and no, I cannot possibly choose between them.

Who would your godly mother or father be (from Percy Jackson)?

I had no idea who would have so I kind of cheated and took a test online. It said Athena - the goddess of wisdom - so I can hardly complain!

Would you be a Downworlder or Nephilim (from the Mortal Instruments)?

A Downworlder! I have an obsession with werewolves so being a werewolf Downworlder would be a dream come true. I couldn't imagine myself as a vampire since I freaked out by blood and needles. I guess I could be a warlock but being immortal would not be fun either. Oh, and I definitely wouldn't want to be a faerie. As much as I love shadowhunters I don't think I would ever make a good fighter and that is the whole point of their lives so... Downworlder all the way!

Which house would you be from (from Harry Potter)?

I would want to be in Ravenclaw but I would probably be put in Hufflepuff...

Which faction would you be in (from Divergent)?

The main reason I didn't enjoy the book Divergent was because I found this idea of sorting people into such specific personality traits to be ridiculous. It would never work. So I really have no idea what I would be in. I don't even remember what they were apart from Dauntless - which I would never be in. Was there a "honesty" one? I think so. I would probably be that one then. I am pretty honest, to the point of being a bit blunt sometimes. Oops!

What would your daemon be (from Northern Lights/Golden Compass)?

I would love the say a wolf but I don't think that really matches my personality. An owl? Or maybe a red panda? I love red pandas!

The Book Blogger Memory Challenge

The Book Blogger Memory Challenge

A fun and easy challenge. Simply answer the questions below to the best of your knowledge. The only rule is you have to do this off the top of your head - no searching on the internet or checking your shelves etc. Lets see how many I can do...

Here I go!

One - Machine Wars (Michael Pryor)

Two - Hidden (Megg Jensen)

Three - There is a character called George in the Laws of Magic series, but he isn't the narrator so I don't know if it counts...

Four - This is What Happy Looks Like (Jennifer E. Smith)

Five - All I Ever Wanted (Vikki Wakefield)

Six - January (Gabrielle Lord)

Seven - Heir of Fire? I think there is a girl holding a knife on the cover - if I remember right!

Eight - One Moment (Kristina McBride)

Nine - Shoot, I don't know what "eponymous" is... *blushes*

Okay, okay, I looked it up and it means "being the person after whom a literary work, film, etc, is named". Does Harry Potter count then? I am going with that.

Ten - Pft! What kind of "challenge" is that? We could all sit here and rattle off about 100 book-movie adaptions, couldn't we? I think a better question would have been: "Which YA books are not being turned into movies at the moment?!" I'll just go with my favourite one: Catching Fire (Suzanne Collins).

*******

I didn't do too bad, did I? How did you go? Link me below to your own challenges or comment what you would have picked.

The Doctor Who Tag

The Doctor Who Tag

Thanks to the gorgeous Izzy @ The Reading Izzy for tagging me in this challenge!

I have never actually watched an episode of Doctor Who, despite the pressure my nerdy friends have put on me to. The show just doesn't look like something I would enjoy. Crime shows are my forte - they are the only shows I watch and really enjoy. Regardless, I am going to give these questions a go and see what happens. Wish me luck!

First Doctor - What is your favourite first book in a series?

I know I use this book in practically every tag challenge but it is a real favourite of mine and definitely my favourite series starter - Blaze of Glory.

Second Doctor - What is your favourite sequel?

I wouldn't go as to say that The Awakening was my "favourite" but it was definitively one of the best sequels I have ever read. I didn't enjoy the previous book much at all so expected to dislike this one similarly. I ended up really enjoying this one though.

Third Doctor - What is your favourite trilogy?

The Infernal Devices. I love this series for lots and lots of reasons that I won't bore you with now. If you haven't read it, go and read it now! Its fantastic. The first book is good, the second book is even better and the last book is perfection in physical form.

Fourth Doctor - What is your most colourful book?

Umm no idea! Does it mean by cover or the pictures inside? I have one book that is more pictures than words- does that count? Its called High in the Clouds. I'll count that one.

Fifth Doctor - What is a book about sports that you have read?

Play With Me is about soccer and I really, really loved it. I have also read a lot of dance/ballet books since I am a dancer myself. I am not sure if that classifies as a "sport" or not though.

Sixth Doctor - What is a book with a really powerful villain you have read?

The Harry Potter series has a villain it called Voldemort. He is probably one of the most terrifying villains  ever to be written about because he is extremely realistic -  despite the magic usage obviously. His villainy is so terrifying because he is obsessed with creating a pure race of wizards - eradicating, murdering and torturing anyone who is descendant from muggles, squibs, or half-bloods even.  Sound vaguely familiar? *cough* Hitler *cough* He was obsessed with creating a pure race to and I think that is why Voldemort's villainy is so successful.

Seventh Doctor - What is your favourite adult or dark book?

I don't read that much adult books so I don't have many to pick from. Either Ice Forged or Don't Let Go probably.

Eight Doctor - What is your favourite romance novel?

A purely romance novel? I don't know what my favourite book would be! I normally read my romance within contemporary, fantasy or paranormal genres anyway. :)

War Doctor - What is a book you wish you could forget you read?

The first one that comes to mind of Queen of Broken Hearts. You can read my review here why I hated it so much.

Ninth Doctor - What is a book that made you pick up a genre again?

When I read Graceling it reminded me of how much I enjoy epic fantasy which was a genre that I had been neglecting for some unknown reason. It made me really want to reread Eragon and check out some new fantasy series!

Tenth Doctor -  What is your favourite super-hyped book?

City of Bones easily. I am not normally a fan of hyped books because I tend to be disappointed by them. The Mortal Instruments were just as good as every said they were though.

Eleventh Doctor - What is your favourite children's or middle grade novel?

My favourite children's books are Roald Dahl's The Witches and The BFG, and I have too many favourite middle grade series to name. Some good ones are Skulduggery Pleasant, the Ruby Redfort series, The Kane Chronicles and Fablehaven.

Twelfth Doctor - What new release are you anticipating?

I am anticipating a lot of books - a lot! (Mainly sequels.) One book I am really for at the moment is This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner. I wasn't a complete fan of the first book but I am anxious to if the sequel is any good. Luckily it comes out in December so there isn't much of a wait!

Top Ten Tuesday #7

This week topic is:-
Top Ten Books For Readers Who Like Character Driven Novels

This is a weekly event created by The Broke and the Bookish where bloggers post a new "Top Ten" list for the particular week's topic. This week's list is in no particular order.

1- 3. Graceling Realm series (Graceling, Fire and Bitterblue)

4- 7. The Inheritance Cycle (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr and Inheritance)

A lot of epic fantasy series require a lot of attention to world-building and a fair amount of character development. These are both one of those fantasy series that nails those elements, but for some readers that meant they got bored by how "slow" the books were. I have to agree that they are a little slow, Eragon more so than Graceling, but only because it was necessary and I personally didn't feel like they were so slow that they became boring. If you can appreciate character-driven epic fantasies, these are the two series you should check out - I would really recommend them!

8. Harry Potter series - This may seem a little odd to include this series in this list. However, even though each of the seven books in this series have quite a bit going on plotwise, there is never a dull moment, I honestly think that the characters are the best part of these books. Maybe they don't necessarily drive the books but the characterization is so perfect and everyone is developed beyond comprehension, even the bad guys are lovable, that is makes the book worth reading. Don't worry future readers however, the books themselves, excluding the characters, are very "readable". I think the characters are just the best part of them.

9. Memoirs of a Geisha - I talked about this book in last week's post because it was a hard book for me to read. Some of the content was a little too graphic for my liking, but that's a discussion for another time. I think one of the best elements of the story was how character driven it was. The protagonist was the main reason the book has been successful, I personally believe. She is a hard character to relate to but she is proud, determined and strong. If it wasn't for her I doubt I would have liked this book much at all.

I don't really have any more character-driven books I can think of, sorry! I know this is a very, very short list this week but this topic was a little harder than normal. What character driven books have you read? Did you like them? Link up below!

The Random Book Questions Tag

The Random Book Questions Tag

This bunch of questions came up on one of my Goodreads groups and I thought it looked like a bit of fun so anyway, here it is! I hope you enjoy.

Have you ever thrown a book?

No! Well, maybe once or twice... I try not to but sometimes I get a little frustrated. *shamefully hangs head*

Do you like lengthy books or short ones?

I honestly don't have a preference. It has to do with genre more than anything. A epic fantasy novel needs a lot of world-building and a contemporary romance is nice when it is short and sweet... it depends!

If you don't like a book do you stop reading it or finish it?

I try to finish all the books I start. Naturally I am a curious person and unfinished books niggle at me until I pick them up again. I don't like not knowing what happens. There are times when I wills stop a book if it is really awful but I normally go back and finish it later.

Do you stop reading when you’re tired, or when a chapter finishes?

I stop at the end of a chapter. Better than stopping half way through a passage, surely!

How do you organize your shelf?

At the moment my bookshelves are organised by colour. It looks so pretty! My OCD tendencies tingle every time I look at it though. All those series split up... *shudder* It won't last long.

Paperback or hardcover?

Paperback for reading and hardcover for looks.

A book you cannot wait to read?

Trial by Tears by Josephine Angelini. I just finished the first book in the series and won't a copy of this asap!

A book you wish could be turned into a graphic novel?

I have never read a graphic novel before and probably won't because they aren't my thing. I don't really know a book that I would like to see written in this format. Maybe Blaze of Glory? That would be cool I guess.

A book that disappointed you?

The most recent book that disappointed me was Eleanor & Park. I know that this is a universally loved book but it wasn't for me. It was even more disappointing because it was also my first Rainbow Rowell book. I was expecting to love it, but I didn't like the characters and I was awfully bored in it.

What book made you cry recently?

I am one of those readers that cry really easily so I wouldn't take too much notice of this. The last book that I cried in would have probably been The Serpent's Shadow.

Do you prefer buying books online of going to the bookstore?

The bookstore hands down. I have actually never bought a book online. Don't ask me why! I have just never done it before.

Do you prefer to listen to music while reading or do you read in silence?

I have to listen to music! Music is the only thing that allows me to space out, I seriously cannot function without it. I always have my earphones in - always! Whether I am doing homework, reading, watching television, vacuuming or cooking dinner. My earbuds are always in!

What is the weirdest thing you've experienced when reading a book?

I don't really know how to answer this question!I guess I would have to say my weirdest experience was time I started Inheritance (the 800+ paged sequel to Eragon). I picked it up the day it was released and started reading it at about 8 or 9 o'clock at night. I was so absorbed in my book the next time I looked up it was 4 o'clock in the morning. That is a solid eight hours of reading! I felt like I have time travelled or something, the time went to fast! It was really weird.

What was your first fandom?

Harry Potter. Wasn't that everyone's? :)

What fictional character do you relate to most?

This is a hard one. I really related to Tessa from The Infernal Devices and Olivia from Don't Even Think About It, but I think the character that I related to most of all was Cole St Clair from the Wolves of Mercy Falls series. He is the only character I have ever read about that truly got my exact feelings about life and love and all those difficult subjects. He will always have the biggest and most important place in my heart.

What fictional do you wish you were more like?

I would really like to be a little bit more like Katniss Everdeen, at least who she was in The Hunger Games and not the bitchy little whinger she turned into in Mockingjay. I always loved how she was so tough and savvy, and the way she took no crap from everyone. She was passionate and stood up for what she wanted. I  have always wished for her determination and her survival skills, of course!

If you could spend a whole day with five characters, who would you pick?

Cole St Clair, William Herondale, Aubrey Fitzwilliam, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.

What is a book that exceeded all your expectations?

Living Dead Girl. Best surprise ever!

Ten Book Challenge

Ten Book Challenge

I was tagged in this challenge by the gorgeous Izzy of The Reading Izzy. Thank you!

The idea of this challenge is pretty simple. List the top ten books that have stayed with you in some way. Try not to take more than a couple of minutes and don't think about it too much. They do not have to be the "right" books or great books of literature, just the ones that have affected you in some way. Include the instructions in the intro and tag ten friends. Be sure to come back and comment on my blog so I can see your list!

Please note that my list is in no real order. I just wrote as it came to mind.

So let's begin!

1. Wolves of Mercy Fall series by Maggie Stiefvater

I love these books more than anything. Cole St Clair is the one character that has ever been able to "get" me. These books are perfect. I couldn't think of any other book which has effected me more.

2. Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

This series is always going to be on my list. While I would never say it was the series that "got me into reading" because, to be truly honest, I have always been a reader, tis series made me discover what reading was really about. I feel in love with it. I was only in grade two but I already loved it. The language, the characters, the magic... this is definitely a book that affected me.

3. Laws of Magic series by Michael Pryor

This series is incredible. Its like nothing I have ever read before and it will always be one of my elite favourites. The characters are amazing!

4. Clockwork Princes by Cassandra Clare

This is the book that has made me cry more than any other book, period. I might add that that is quite an accomplishment - I am a bit of an easy crier.

5. The Host by Stephenie Meyer

One of the only novels to perfect a dystopian romance. The characters were beautiful, the world was intriguing, the plot was intense.

6. The 100 by Kass Morgan

I had no expectations for this book when I requested it on Netgalley. I was absolutely blown away by it though. Easily my favourite book of 2014 so far.

7. Tiger Lily by Jodi Anderson

This is one of the best fairytale retellings I have ever read. There was just something so unique about the writing style and the characters. It was gorgeous and poetic but not flowery at the same time. A real piece of art, this one.

8. Graceling Realm series by Kristin Cashore

This is my all-time favourite high fantasy book. The romance and characters were just perfect. I will never forget Po and Katsa.

9. Unreap My Heart (Reaper #2) by Kate Evangelista

This book surprised me so much. It was funny and heart-wrenching and kept you on your toes. There were two POVs and both were equally incredible.

10. The Maze Runner by James Dashner

I know a lot of people disliked this book but I thought I was one of the most creative and suspenseful books I have ever read.

***************

Well, that's the Ten Book Challenge for you. I found that quite hard actually and I am not sure I did it quite right. In the end I kind of made a list of my favourite books but anyway! What would you have picked? Did we have any books in common? Let me know below.

I am going to tag:-

Or anyone else reading this. Don't forget to link back to me. I would love to see your answers too.

The Back to School Tag

The Back to School Tag

 picture

Although it isn't "back to school" season for me - in fact, school is almost over for the year - I thought this looked like a bit of fun and decided to do the tag anyway. Thanks to Brittnee over at Brittnee Bryan for her open tag.

You've just started back and your workload has already increased. Which short book would you read that wouldn't take up too much time?

The Giver - I just bought myself a copy of this book and I am eager to complete it before I go to check out the movie. Its under 200 pages so it won't take me very long.

You are in English class and your teacher says you will be spending the lesson reading an assigned book. What book did you have to read for school, but ended up really enjoying?

I honestly haven't enjoyed any of the books that I have had to read for school. They have all been dull and too moral-driven for my liking. If I absolutely had to pick one of them it would probably be The Outsiders but I really wasn't a fan of it.

You and your friends have had an argument and you are feeling quite upset. What book never fails to cheer you up?

Anna and the French Kiss - I would want a book that I found funny and was easily readable and that immediately reminds me of Anna and the French Kiss. I loved the characters, the dialogue was witty and hilarious and the plotline was easy-going. Definitely a book to read for a pick-me-up

You've been given detention. What book do you wish you have that could pass the time?

Eragon - This is one of those books that require a bit of attention to get into so it is a really good book to read when you are waiting for something. You get absorbed into the world and the language and the lore easily so you don't notice the time passing. Perfect for reading in detention!

The bell rings for lunch time! Name a food from a book you would love to try.

The first thing that came to mind was butterbeer but that isn't really a food - though I won't deny I am dying to taste it. I think the gum from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory would be pretty cool since it tastes like a three course meal all rolled into one. I wouldn't want to risk turning into a giant blueberry however! My ultimate would have to be the magical candy from the Candy Shop War series. How can you resist lollies that give you powers!?

You have a ton of homework to do and one of your assignments is to write a short story. What author's writing style do you most enjoy reading?

Tahreh Mafi... joking, joking! Her writing style made me want to hang myself it was that awful. Maggie Stiefvater is my favourite writer. Her style is gorgeous to say the least. It is poetic and lyrical but it doesn't come across as flowery or that love-dovey wish-wash that some authors try out. She manages to blend the perfect amount of poetry with "normal" writing so it remains readable and still  drives home the point she is trying to make. I know that description doesn't sound very appealing but trust me, it works! Read her Wolves of Mercy Falls series.

Uh oh, exam time! The nerves are getting to you. Which book do you read to calm yourself down?

Harry Potter - I know I have been saying that a lot but Harry Potter was my childhood and it will always be bookish security blanket. It times of need it always there to fall back on and I will read it over and over for the rest of my life.

You did amazingly well on your exams and are given some money as a reward. What book(s) do you rush out to buy?

I have sooo many books on my wishlist but at the moment there are two books on the top of my list: Shiver and Linger. I have a copy of Forever but I don't have a copy of these two and I really would love them - the collector's edition hardcover especially since they are one of my elite favourite series.

Summer is almost upon us. What book do you read to get you into the mood for the fun and excitement that summer brings?

I would really like to read The Summer I Turned Pretty series soon and that sounds like the perfect series to get into a summery mood!

 **************

Well, that's it folks! Have you complete this challenge? How would you have answered these questions? Leave you links and comments below.

I am going to tag Izzy @ The Izzy Reader and Brittany @ Space Between the Spines in is this tag challenge as well as anyone that wants to try this out.

The Book Life Tag

The Book Life Tag

This is a post I saw on Izzy's new blog, The Reading Izzy, and I simply love the idea of it. Its practically a little bio of yourself if you were able to pick your own family and life from your favourite books.

Although I wasn't tagged in it I decided I wanted to do it anyway. There were so many hard decision to make! I have too many favourite characters and fictional worlds I want to visit. If you had asked me these questions yesterday I probably would have given different answers, but anyway, here are what I was able to decide on.

Who would be your father?

Remus Lupin - the lovable teacher and father figure in the Harry Potter series was easily my first pick. He is smart, understanding, and kind. I love his loyalty, his strength, and his perseverance; the way he love with all his heart, the way he doesn't ever give up despite his condition, and the way he appreciates logical thought despite having magic at his disposal. I think he would be an amazing father.

Who would be your mother?

Charlotte Brantwell - this is the gorgeous, lovely, beautiful, amazing woman from the Infernal Devices series. Charlotte would an amazing mother. She is fiercely loyal and protective. She is smart and kickass. She doesn't have to go with the flow, she stands up for herself and what she believes in. She was a feminist icon!

Who would be your bookish brother?

Aubrey Fitzwilliam - this hilariously witty, handsome, genius protagonist from the Laws of Magic series would make a hell of a twin brother. He is one of the smartest characters I have ever read about, and definitely has the bets one-liners.  He is always getting into trouble and I can only imagine what sort of adventures we would get up to! I think he would  make a great brother - twin or older obviously, not younger!

Who would be your pet?

I am having a tough time deciding this one. I am stuck between Saphira the dragon from Eragon, Marley the dog from Marley & Me, Enzo from The Art of Racing in the Rain, and Hedwig, Harry Potter's owl. The more I think about it, Saphira doesn't really count as a "pet" in that sense. She is more of a best friend... just in dragon form! It would have to be either Marley, Enzo or Hedwig. I really cannot decide!

Where would you live?

Alagaesia - the world that Eragon and the rest of the Inheritance series is based in. This has to one of my absolute favourite fantasy worlds, if not my very favourite. I loved the landscape and the diversity of the land. There is everything from forests to dry-as-Satan's-tongue deserts, mountain ranges so tall they disappear into the heavens to the beautiful oceans. There are islands, hidden caves, and forests made of stone trees. There are little villages and big villages. Plains, lakes, and so much more. Its such a gorgeous place! I also love that it is inhabited by a lot of different species and there is magic there!

Where would you go to school?

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - is there really any other place people would consider? I am not going to bother listing my reasons for choices this place. My list would be practically endless.

Who would be your significant other?

William Herondale or Cole St Clair - I love both of these characters for completely different reasons and wouldn't be able to choose. They both have their different perks but I love them equally. Is polygamy allowed in Alagesia? *chuckles*

***************

Well, that's my fictional life. What's yours? Tell me below or leave you links. I won't tag anyone in particular since I wasn't tagged myself, but if you are reading this and want to do the post consider yourself tagged! I would love a link back if you do.
